River Side Findings

Last night I was again at my new favorite spot to paint, along the river's edge. The river has finally receeded to reveal the rocks and the ground dry enough for me to walk. It was a nice surprise to see these wild flowers blooming in more than a foot of water. Just you in case you can't tell, the blops are suppose to be rocks. I think these rocks were placed here to prevent the riverbanks from washing away.
It was dusk when I started so I painted quickly with a palette knife and hoped my first strokes were accurate because there wasn't time for correcting.

You don't need to tell us what they are...it's clear. This painting has that really interesting quality of being handled in an abstract way (up close it looks like it would dissolve into pure non-readable paint), and yet, it's totally evident that those are rocks. The whole scene reads. And, they're beautiful rocks.
I love the composition here too.

oh good. Then perhaps I'm on the right track. tricky thing handling abstraction and realism. I'm always questioning if I'm going to far in one direction. I like having both in my paintings. And then there's always that lovely question, cool light warm shadows??? But with the dusk sky reflecting right overhead, I was thinking cool light

This painting definitely reads cool light. I think you did a wonderful job of capturing a tricky subject. I also like the feathery look to the vegetation. Lovely, Susan!

Hi Janelle, so glad you appreciate the effort. Isn't it all just so difficult (and rewarding)and yet, we just have to do it.

I really like the abstract nature of this piece.

Hi Judith, So glad you said "abstract quality" because I'm trying to merge realism with the abstract we see in everyday.
