Seascapes

These two oil studies represent the body of work I did during our two weeks in Costa Rica. My favorite location was right along the shore. Since I was anxious to get into those waves most of my oils were 8"x6."

"The Egg Cup" (sold)

Due to a storm, we've been without electricity, thus the reason I wasn't able to post anything yesterday. Thankfully I have a nice window in my studio to light my subject but I needed a book light on my canvas because of the dark rainy sky. My study focused on painting white things, quite a challenge.
This is my last post for a couple of weeks as I'll be out of the country.

"The Gardener"

I've been working on capturing people where they live and work. She looked very happy working in her garden and was completely unaware that I was painting her.

"Reflections"

These flowers looked so beautiful that I had to try and paint them. Someone artfully left them to float in a birdbath creating a calming atmosphere that separated their garden from the chaos of city dwelling.

"After The Dance"

The model took this pose while on break which we then used as the next pose. I liked how her body naturally draped into itself.

"Crossroads" (private collection)

Painted this charming intersection this morning. It was always busy with people passing by, stopping to get coffee and pausing to greet each other. I was after contrasting the sunny side of the street with the shadow side.

"Morning Mist"

The humid weather created an interesting mist off the lake early in the morning. I quickly tried to capture the effect.

This morning I put three peony buds into a vase. This evening they opened up magnificently. For me, they signal the start of summer.

"Red Tulip"

Red Tulips are probably my favorite flowers. This time of year they are getting difficult to find. This piece was created with a palette knife.

"hot house"

Yes, more tomatoes but this time done with a ton of thick paint applied and whipped about with a palette knife. I really want the viewer to feel the lushy-ness of the viberant warm and cool colors.

"Red Bud"

I love the color on these flowering trees. This year I only found time to paint one. These late spring colors are a huge relief against our gray skies.

This morning I met the LaGrange Plein Air Painters in Brookfield. I love intersections. That combined with trying to create the atmospher of humid morning air made for quite a challenging.

"Clear Answer"

This woman caught my eye because her gray hair was almost to her knees. As I was painting her it became apparent that here is a woman comfortable with herself.
