On the Shore

In the evenings I've been playing with small format figure paintings which I recently called my "blop paintings." I'm really having fun in my own little bubble. They seem to work best if I'm working directly from life but that's not always possible so I've started taking a gesture from another painting and using it all on it's own, also working from my horrible little scribbles and photos.
A new collector of mine recently framed four to hang as a grouping. It gave me a boost to see them hanging and revitalizing that space in her home.
This is 6"x8." Which is the largest I think my "blop" paintings should be.

The figure has got weight and drape and solidity. I'm impressed you can do this without having a model (that's hard enough!)

Thanks Karen, I just thought "blop and leave it." I really make a huge mess doing these. I'm sort of wondering where it will lead.

So lovely. You say so much in a small canvas. I can't help but be impressed.

Isn't this size painting fun to work on? I love how quickly I'm able to finish one this size and how it forces me to keep things simple.

Nice beach scene Susan! It looks finished without being overworked.

Hi Kim,
glad to know it looks fresh and not overworked because that's a problem I have when I'm not working from life.
These little pieces take longer when I'm trying to redo a painting than the original done from life. go figure.

I sure love your "blop" paintings.

I really find for myself that those small format paintings are fun and satisfying.

Yours must do the same for you... they certainly do for the viewer!

Dear Marian, Thank you so much. It's just so fun working this size and I'm learning a lot.
