"Dana"- oil study

My favorite and most challenging subject to paint is portraits. This is a 4 hour oil study. I wish I had had 40 hours. Besides trying to capture a likeness, I wanted to capture the glow of her youthful skin, the feeling of structure- bones, muscles, life, and interesting brush strokes, attention to edges, correct values,... When I get frustrated at my progress I remind myself that it's all a beautiful journey and to enjoy the process.

Don't get frustrated...because you did every single thing that you said you wanted to do here. And I love that bluish brushstroke down near her collar.

I love the facial expression you captured and the way her hair disappears into the background at the bottom.

I used to do pencil portraits eons ago... took me forever to get the likeness just right.... that you accomplished this lovely portrait in just 4 hours is amazing to me!

Hi, I found your link on Karen's blog. This is a sensational head painting. I think it's mesmerizing.

Really like this one, Susan. Lots of volume and conviction.
