This past month I participated in four plein air events and had so much fun despite the bad weather. I think after painting through the winter a little storm & lightening doesn't bother me anymore. susan hong-sammonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04078097993647685090noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31272502.post-20912382860103852622013-03-22T12:48:00.001-05:002013-03-22T12:48:10.639-05:00Plein Air in the Winter

We've had a few nice snow storms this month making plein air painting extraordinarily fun. The world becomes quiet, making the whole experience more productive and personal. Try tucking a hand-warmer in your hat and waistband. It keeps the chill away a bit longer.

"Inverted C" was painted near my home along the Desplaines River. I probably never would have found this spot if it hadn't been for my old dogs wanting to get as close to the water as possible. I try to keep Edgar Payne's compositional guidelines in mind. In my small sketchbook I start with pencil sketches to organize my concept/composition and values. Most of my plein air work is smaller, about 9"x12," but this oil is 12"x16."

One of my favorite themes is reflections. I think it's a great tangent for playing with abstract concepts within representational art. Check out Forrest Moses amazing paintings and monotypes. "BackYard Reflections is a 8"x10" plein air study in oils.
Last fall I taught a plein air workshop in Brown County, IN. The colors were gorgeous and the painting locations amazing. T.C.Steele estates also allowed us unlimited access. After class I continued to paint along side a few hardy students. "Autumn Red" is a 16"x12" plein air piece painted near Nashville, IN. We will repeat this workshop October 2013. Contact me for further information.
I love to travel and this year I am fortunate to do more than usual. I have recently returned from an intense trip through Venice, Croatia, the Dolomites and a day in Austria. I have my plein air kit down to a convenient size and weight, (using linen mounted on gatorboard has greatly reduced the weight.) Because of Jill Carver's excellent advice, I focus on hunting/gathering information en plein air in order to allow mother nature to be my teacher.
We will be painting in the beautiful setting of Taos. You will learn practical tips for setting up on location, working quickly and directly from nature, all with oil paints. We will cover equipment options to keep your gear simple and pared down, using a limited palette, focusing on big shapes, clean color, compositions, finding a focus and simple value patterns in order to capture the essence of the scene. The goal in this workshop is to learn how to take the scene before us, translate it into a simple and expressive composition, and then paint it quickly, directly, and confidently. After the 3 days of guided painting exercises and daily critiques, we will spend the 4th day painting more independently at a location with the group, followed by an afternoon critique and closing “wrap-up” session.
Compact supply list, syllabus, as well as recommended housing/B&Bs near to painting locations.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpoKjp248keX2jtDmXpESVnYs2ACy9B4XzBiPMMLKwMmVYOVqnQZScIT93E_KmFtpxweRvltTk9v1abb1HmpepTSQtic7YLZhStD-NIKlNmagfF5IN3-d5PCbs8Gg7g8clvExy/s320/Skipping+Stones+lg+Deerfield.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690451876353692322" />

The Landscape of Riverside: Works Inspired by Nature
Oil Painters Karen Phipps, Susan Hong-Sammons, Ellie McDonald, photographer Sophia Soluri, and poems by Rachel Noelle will present new works inspired by the local landscape and nature of Riverside at the Riverside Public Library during the months of December and January. The tutu is created by www.tutuschic.etsy.com. Normally I can't work from photographs because I find it very boring. Despite a drizzly morning I really wanted to paint the bluebells before they disappeared until next year. Of course part way through the sun came out. I'm not complaining. I'll take the rays even if it meant prematurely stopping on my little oil study. Next time, paint faster or rather with better accuracy. So I'm posting an almost finished painting. I'm still tackling florals. (I also need to tackle documenting them accurately with my digital camera.) These large old fashion roses have a lot of transmitted light through their petals and getting them just right in oils is a huge challenge.
Thank you for all the nice birthday wishes. I love their warm and inviting color. And I love how they remind me of spring. Unfortunately a few hours after receiving 2 dozen yellow tulips they began to bend and snap 4-6 inches along their stems. Maybe because their buds were large in comparison to their skinny stems??? The following morning I clipped them and put them in water goblets. I think maybe I should have used a different color cloth instead of this khaki green. Any suggestions?
"Mello Yellow" oil on linen 24"x12"susan hong-sammonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04078097993647685090noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31272502.post-83153773394725961222011-01-11T19:22:00.008-06:002011-01-11T19:37:40.491-06:00lost momentum<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwZaX6DAOUroIuzc8V7IaBRXDpUyR3wjS9bWCugqyHSfXUWe8VfOTSsUsfldMun4rarJ4CDAEFBa10ouqTA3RWur6yyfwDM-mYlMMzponx2t9pZertef8fGvcMpTH2RBtujSwA/s320/1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104847628900706" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-srXnXWM8EmW4TFVgE-ELCcS6QFtaNFprdsCylTKKEB-DGZALVfMPXFcE0VDn4U20UGSBXUCAsnVaVx8PyUzQzmT_gQ9cMGja5xSiqI11AbOWx3765b3_EYYJBRjunH9USdfE/s320/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104688275514786" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_wO4sUWgQahCNfjpFCyMNFHMEe0SVaIvV1w_SSg6XUUBENO2SNu6zQL8TMBXjogqf9oMWEcMBCFVM6zurDYDHCX9OiJH6HKGtVJIzpmEHPSjLuCxFTBfkSouymOeNZIpg3fWu/s320/3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104615778324546" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQxRyQUUkPnOTXD8U5q5ypH_cq_mVKXeG20HgMw4oxcqJx5ki5okz5OMQVLzUVhz_yv7J2KmpGh_r1_bXUmt4jDTkv2U0LSldQEdnUCQw4ODHAJq3G7i1iOe0uFQiUsBhtqxFt/s320/4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104538825542594" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibnlrdGOfHvA8Bo_ULOTP6QhdysB6p5pXFQuhPWbNgTnkRZvjnP5ACRP75_u93SVt4dVVtAP3KzT4MwBc3l2Csr1uq4TiXmdXH5O_TlnFD96kCxw7O3eTt6_tb3VQBVKfiKP45/s320/5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104346271706018" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 160px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiiMSyWcUlk23e3EuH5zu-sLVpdXVTSFsvy77vy8Z3-jDzPCWrtBBssRuipJ2k6_CaGx88V1KrXcEZ-Euej-05PdeORVMqc_LcoYFIjC-vrX_2Gl-FyLg9nOsHfneDXpp3tue9/s320/sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561104254857662386" />
I started and worked on this painting for two evenings prior to a house full of Christmas guest and never got back to it until tonight. When I began the painting, I felt it was going in the right direction but having left it alone for so long I feel like I've lost the original idea. I can't see what I originally had in my head anymore. So I'm going to turn it towards the wall for a month or more and hopefully, once I look at it with a fresh eye, I'll be able to finish it. But if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input.
(I prefer to paint on a linen canvas which I already painted on but never finished. In the first few images you can see the remains of a figure oil sketch.)susan hong-sammonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04078097993647685090noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31272502.post-58314258574223319802011-01-07T09:09:00.006-06:002011-05-21T07:57:03.608-05:00"Autumn Leaves" oil 6x8<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 231px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4NP4RV8LsBWXsynjkCgvMG7-u2M37EoeXT0hlXwPxhkqvqObkhQNCEf4nGOOJPhjpJ7JWabDWD0l7tN3zKO19KeXdKXohipiMu6Fe-nsx4xss3RNoaIOIYZ0GpLtxF7CS3r3i/s320/Within+the+Fall+Colors+blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559463137798165666" />
One of my new year's resolution is to be more consistent with my blog posts. This oil study was painted before our first heavy snow. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year. I love the warm colors and cool temperatures. It was so nice to be inside the woods, standing on a thick cushion of fall leaves, and painting just as the afternoon was about to end.
Oil 6"x8" soldsusan hong-sammonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04078097993647685090noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31272502.post-61574325245908450272010-12-25T08:47:00.004-06:002010-12-25T08:53:36.795-06:00Merry Christmas<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWFX2eUNN3o8X9InQz66y-wNOE11JlpT4gI2kPSfDnL7xR7VaowA_qHvO1yI8Kh9tulWvV9lqSMmDn7JjJRJFKA7VIVdtGnIcGMt2Mn5m2AnKcheZf2VaQxKwL37eO-jlmIjHA/s320/IMG_1852.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5554632498150140402" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 225px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhck57d4cwC6ozmZgCFadZfoDpvXyRb7_dsuIQyqy523iD96b4WmP8oUGNHW23Ee7HKqshce8NFiitCCJSzArJqEVaQys_Q9RkKaPZeKWr2B7EQeagWeQmSNMEuWaCRwXG35Ox3/s320/IMG_1850+Christmas.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5554632249472159458" />
I painted this several years ago while studying at The Atelier (Lack) in Minnesota. Most of these paintings are quick oil studies done lately at my local malls and cafes. No one seems to mind that I'm creating these tiny figure studies or notices. Also, I've returned to the Palette and Chisel where there is always a model to paint as well as several truly amazing artists to observe. This portrait study was done at the P&C. I find after quickly figuring my size and placement through shadow, I zoom in on the nose and eyes.susan hong-sammonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04078097993647685090noreply@blogger.com2
