This week it's finally been warm enough that while plein air painting I have not had to wear long johns, feet and hand warms, wool sweaters, and several other layers but, I still need gloves and a heavy coat. Still with the sun shining sometimes, I was motivated to bring out my little poached box made by fellow plein air painter and part-time carpenter, Denny. This sweet little paint box has a strap on the bottom where I can slip my palm into or, if sitting, strap around my leg. So I tried to escape and do quick little 5"x7" studies and try to catch the spring landscape. Here is a sample of a few I did. Karen and I noticed that even on a sunny day the sky is hazy, not bright blue like we had in Arizona. Is that because in Arizona we were painting in high altitudes??? (Denny also makes wet panel carriers. This one is for my 5x7 panels)

I admire your plein air adventures, during all types of weather. You and Karen are true artists in every sense of the word. Bravo!
I love the colors of your spring plein air paintings. Your postings are such a learning experience to me. Your sense of composition is so important for plein air painting. I got into trouble this past week. So overwhelmed by the magnificent weather and sites. Love the pochade box, and panel carrier. Your friend should start a business.
The box is so tiny! Perfect for plein air! I need such a well made carrier. I use a cardboard one. Great color in these pieces.
I love that little carrier too! (sorry I broke it the fist time I picked it up :( )
Love these little pieces...I think you got the sunniness just right, because it isn't clear sun here!! Yes, I want to know why too!! grrr.
Hello Janelle, Joan, Pam, and Karen,
and yes, Denny could start a business making palm boxes but he's so busy painting. My hope is that with these small starts I can focus on creating stronger and more bolder beginnings before pulling out my larger canvases. Happy Painting!!!!
susan,
your art and blog inspires...
congratulations...
I have to get one of these boxes. It looks like an interesting way to paint and I go hiking quite a bit. It wouldn't hurt to carry the pochade box along with the camera. Hubby can carry the water. Maybe I can get him to pose out of doors for me.
Awesome sketches AND pochade box & panel carriers! They are a handy little size for sketching!!! (yeah, he might want to consider a business!)
Hello Carol and Roxanne, Denny does sell these boxes. He will have two more available by the beginning of June with the wet panel carrier. If you're interested let me know and I'll pass on his contact info. His 5x7 box is so easy to get outside and paint that I'm out more frequently and waste less time. Love my "Denny" box (p.s. after June he's having surgery and will be out of commission for several months)
Great pochades Susan.
